It should go without saying, all WoW players should be aware of is LoS and being OoR. For those unaware that is Line of Sight and Out of Range.
Let’s start with LoS.
There are many instances where Line of Sight is a factor in your gaming experience; the most important is that of where you are in relation to the healer. If the healer can’t see you, they can’t heal you. If you are out of LoS with the healer, it is your fault not theirs. It is not the healers’ responsibility to keep you in LoS.
Even as a tank you should always be aware of your positioning as it relates to your healer. If you choose to go inside a door way or around a corner, realize that the healer can not see you therefore you get no heals. It is not ok to expect the healer to rush in, find you and blow all of their cool downs to prevent a wipe.
If this happens constantly, you have a fail tank. As basic as this is, there are a glut of fail tanks out there. Undue stress on the healer makes for rough game play for all. If you are here to sharpen your skills make sure that healer LoS is not on your fail list.
While healer LoS is important it is not the only LoS you should be concerned with.
Mob LoS is also important. I
If the tank is pulling and ducking around a corner to get the ranged mob to come to him, stay BEHIND the tank. Do not position yourself between the tank and the mob ever!
It is the tanks job to control the mob and the positioning of the fight, do not make his/her job harder. Normally while LoS pulling the tank has very little threat on the mob, it would be foolish to gamble at this point. Get behind the tank and let him/her establish threat then you can do your thing. There are many encounters in the game where you have to move behind an object to break LoS with the mob. If this is part of the event make sure you get out of sight. It is not the tanks responsibility to chase down a mob because you refuse to leave the fail parade.
If a few pugs out there would live by the motto “you pull it you tank it” (without heals of course) there would be far less participants in the fail parade.
OoR: Out of Range
This is just what it says, you are out of range. This is no ones fault but yours. If the healer has a 30 yard cast range and you decide to stand 31 yards away from the healer, you fail. There is a solution though, MOVE. If the healer has to tell you more than once that you are OoR you fail. Stop depending on others to make up for your lack of skill in this basic area. Get in and stay in range of the healers.
