I have been thinking about the new Monk class that is headed our way in Mists of Pandaria. For me the announcement of the class is bitter sweet. On one hand I love the idea of a Kung-Fu Monk smacking the crap out of things. On the other hand I am melee gimped. Have I mentioned that I hate Blizzard?
One of the unique things about the Monk class is their lack of auto attacks. Another thing that intrigues me is the use of a “combo” style system of attacks. Those of you who play brawler style games should be intimately familiar with this type of play. I have some doubts about whether or not it will work in WoW.
Currently we have a system that relies on rotation and procs with the procs being determined by the RNG gods. In traditional combo style games the finishing move is the big payoff instead of a proc. The problem I see is that in brawlers the player misses the chance to use a finisher when they screw up the combo or the computer/player defends. This isn’t quite the case in WoW.
I am very interested to see how they are going to implement this in game. I have a hunch that it will be something akin to the “eclipse” system employed by the caster druids. I am guessing that the light/dark force system will determine when the Monk can use its big finisher. I could be wrong but for right now I don’t see any other way the combo/finisher system will work.
It is possible that I missed something in the limited Monk details that we have been given. If any of you out there know something more please point me in the right direction. It would be greatly appreciated!

Obviously we don’t have a lot of details yet, but playing devils advocate I would imagine we’ll see the combo system be more like the melee combat style in Rift. IE Rogue style combo points + finishers, probably have combo builder attacks that only activate certain finishers, probably animal styles crane kicks, etc.
I’m interested in seeing how it works, for now I’m (trying) not to go off the deep end thinking of what it might be.
I am excited for it. It should be interesting to say the least. Of course being melee gimped it will be an uphill battle for sure.
